The gastrointestinal tract is the biggest immune interface with the environment. Exposure to a lot of dietary and microbial antigens requires complex and highly regulated immune responses by different mucosal cell types, which results in the induction and maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. Alterations of this balance can lead to chronic inflammation in the gut.
